7 Tips for Writing Better AI Prompts for Marketing Copy

The quality of AI-generated content is directly proportional to the quality of your prompts. A vague prompt produces vague content. A specific, well-structured prompt produces content that is nearly ready to publish. Here are seven proven techniques to level up your prompt engineering.

1. Be Specific About Your Audience

Instead of "write a blog post about productivity," try "write a blog post about productivity tips for remote marketing managers at mid-size B2B companies." The more specific you are about who the content is for, the more relevant the output will be.

2. Define the Format and Structure

Tell the AI exactly what you want: "Write a 1,200-word blog post with an introduction, 5 sections with H2 headers, and a conclusion with a call to action." This eliminates ambiguity and gives you predictable, structured results.

3. Provide Context and Examples

Share background information that the AI would not otherwise know. Include links to reference materials, competitor examples, or past content that represents the quality you are aiming for.

4. Specify Tone and Voice

Do not assume the AI knows your brand voice. Even with brand voice training enabled, adding tone guidance like "professional but approachable, avoiding jargon" helps fine-tune the output.

5. Include Constraints

Set boundaries: word count limits, specific keywords to include or avoid, compliance requirements, or stylistic preferences. Constraints actually improve creativity by giving the AI clear parameters to work within.

6. Ask for Multiple Variations

Instead of asking for one version, request three variations with different angles or hooks. This gives you options to choose from and often surfaces unexpected creative directions.

7. Iterate and Refine

Your first prompt rarely produces perfect results. Use the output as a starting point and refine your prompt based on what worked and what did not. Over time, you will build a library of proven prompts for different content types.
